General Overview
The Valkyries are Northeastern Womxn’s Club Ultimate Team. Our team was founded in 2001 and now has two teams, A and B, with over 60 players involved.
There is no prior experience necessary to join the Valkyries. The Valkyries strive to be a welcoming family and are committed to supporting womxn’s players of all backgrounds and identities. Our program is open to female-identifying, genderqueer, gender fluid and/or non-binary persons. If you have any questions about eligibility, feel free to reach out to Valkyries’ leadership.
History
Northeastern had a co-ed ultimate team until 2001 when there were enough players to form a separate womxn’s team. Our team name came directly from our original players, who spent the summer of 2001 searching for, discussing, and voting on a team name. The team officially became the Valkyries on July 19, 2001.
Valkyries come from Norse mythology and are the “choosers of the fallen”. They decide which warriors may die in battle and who among them are worthy of the afterlife. Valkyries are associated with fairness and brightness, and often depicted riding horses. They are a symbol of female power and strength. Our team name is a huge part of our identity and we are proud to continue the legacy of the amazing womxn who have represented the Valkyries over the years. The Valkyries wear #8 on our jerseys in loving memory of 2009 Alumna, Stephanie Barker, who left us in 2013.
The Valkyries developed into a competitive college team by 2008, which was the first year we attended a flying tournament and the first year we qualified for Nationals. Since then, the Valkyries qualified for Nationals in 2009, 2013, 2014, and 2019. Our A Team works to be nationally competitive every season.
The Valkyries grew large enough to have a B Team by 2009. Our B Team focuses on player development and competes in New England Developmental Sectionals at the end of their season.
We would love for you to join the Valkyries! Come out to an open practice in the fall or email valkyriescaptains@gmail.com to find out how to get involved.
