Our Mission
Northeastern University Sustainable Building Organization (NUSBO) seeks to engage and connect members interested in the field of sustainable building and foster multi-disciplinary relationships between students, educators and professionals in the industry.
NUSBO is a student organization founded in 2016 by a handful of students in Northeastern’s Sustainable Building Systems master’s program and is open to graduate AND undergraduate students in ANY program or department. We strive to build a community that cares about the development of the built environment and expose people to building science including the latest developments in building technology and design.
Professional Affiliations

We are affiliated with the Built Environment Plus, formerly known as the Massachusetts Chapter of the USGBC (US Green Building Council). They have become the ‘lead advocate’ for the WELL Building Standard as well as host the Living Building Challenge Collaborative of Boston.
NUSBO strongly resonates with their Mission and Vision Statements:
We drive sustainable and regenerative design, construction, and operation of the built environment! We envision a thriving and diverse community, creating a built environment of net positive systems of water and energy, of financial and social equity, and of ecological and human health.

We are also Northeastern University’s ASHRAE (formally American Society of Heating, Refrigeration & Air-Conditioning Engineers) Student Branch. The ASHRAE Boston Chapter was started in 1912 and provides opportunities for students to interact with local industry professionals.
Their focus on building systems, energy efficiency, indoor air quality, refrigeration and sustainability within the industry incorporates the HVAC&R industry to the multi-disciplinary approach that NUSBO stands for.

We are also an academic member of NESEA – the Northeast Sustainable Energy Association – a group that works to advance the adoption of sustainable energy practices in the built environment by cultivating a community where practitioners share, collaborate, and learn.
NESEA’s commitment to increasing sustainability in the built environment aligns with NUSBO’s mission and helps facilitate our engagement with professionals in the sustainability community.
