Diversity Programs

Resource Guide to Finance Diversity Programs

What is a diversity program? These are 1-2 day programs where candidates are invited to the firm for presentations, workshops, and networking events. It is the firm’s way of getting qualified candidates to learn more about their firm and the industry in general.

How much does it cost? Transportation and accommodation expenses are paid for by the firm. They also provide food throughout your stay. This means: no cost to you!

What is the benefit of these? These programs are designed to get you in front of professionals and human resources, and, if done properly, they will get you in the pipeline for internship opportunities the following year (attendees are usually offered accelerated interviews). Most of the firms below also hire co-ops. This is a great chance to show the firm that you have shown initiative in regard to learning more about the firm and industry. It will give you an advantage in the interview process as well as something to talk about with your interviewer.

What should I know before I go? You should know that the firms do not expect you to be an expert on their firm or the industry! They are targeting underclassmen so that they can teach you more about these things. They mainly want to see that you’ve shown an interest in the field and a desire to learn more. You also do not have to be a business major to attend most of these programs.

What do I do if I’m accepted into a program? You want to dress extremely professional and make an effort to leave a good impression on everyone you meet, both employees and other student attendees. Ask questions when the opportunity arises, read up on the firm / recent news for speaking points, ask for business cards of the people you speak with, and follow up (cannot emphasis this part enough). These programs are an opportunity for you to make connections with people that will be resources during the recruiting process, so it is imperative that you send thank you emails after the events and keep in touch with these people from time-to-time.

How many can I apply to? This is a numbers game. The more you apply to, the better your chances are of getting accepted into one. They receive a lot of applicants each spring but apply to as many as you can and don’t forget to apply again each year that you are eligible. The only restriction is if you get accepted into two different programs at the same firm. The firm will have you choose one to attend but encourage you to apply to all to increase your chances.

Am I eligible? You are eligible for most of the programs below if you identify as either a woman or URM (underrepresented minority – Black, Hispanic, Native American, LGBTQ, disabled, veteran status).

Also, since Northeastern is a 4 or 5 year program, when the firm says “sophomores” for example, it means they want someone graduating in 2021. This means you are still eligible if you’re a third-year student on a five-year track, or a second-year student on a four-year track (both have graduating years of 2021).
