What blocks student achievement in East Boston?

East Boston High School has a lower graduation rate than many other schools in Boston and Massachusetts. This project aims to find the story behind the data.

Which factors affect student performance?

Two of the main factors contributing to low student achievement are poverty and being a non-native speaker of English. We measure non-native speakers by counting the number of English Language Learners, or ELL. These charts show the relation between poverty and ELL enrollment and low rates of high school graduation.

How does East Boston compared with Boston and Massachusetts?

East Boston High, which draws students largely from the neighborhood, has a higher rate of English Language Learners (students in classes for non-native speakers) and more low income families than the city or state. These factors correlate with lower high school graduation and college attendance rates.
