Abstract: This ‘Exploring Boston’s Neighborhoods’ project is a cumulation of research and exploration of the Lower Roxbury neighborhood where Ellis Memorial, our service-learning location, is based. To better understand the role both Ellis Memorial and local history have in the Lower Roxbury community, information from reliable online sources as well as conversations with residents were assembled into a cohesive presentation. The project highlights the strengths and challenges that Lower Roxbury experiences as well as important local sites. Because this project was assigned at the beginning of the semester, it allowed for us to learn more about the community we were volunteering in before we were entirely immersed in it. This provided a solid foundation for us going in to service-learning because we now knew much more about the community and its culture. It is vital to recognize and respect the background of students we work with, so this project helped us to form a strong relationship with the Ellis community.
