PreCalculus - Introduction to Calculus for Biology

Self-Diagnostic

Here is a self diagnostic exam of algebra and trignometry skills used at the University of California at Berkeley. After answering the multiply choice questions, you can have the computer grade your quiz for you. You can try this more than once. Let me know where you are having trouble.

Here is an Algebra Review for MATH 1241 Calculus I. If you can do everything on this, then you are ready for Math 1241.

Description

This is an intensive introduction to calculus with algebra review covering selected material from Differential Calculus (calc. I) and Integral Calculus (calc. II). The intended audience are students who plan to take a college level calculus course but have not taken a high school level calculus course or else have performed poorly because of weak algebra skills. An algebra diagnostic will be administered at the beginning of the course and selected algebra topics will be reviewed as necessary. Additional algebra topics may be assigned to individual students as required.

This is a "hands-on", "skills-emphasized" course. There will be weekly handouts which students work on in class and then complete for homework. Online Readings and videos should be reviewed before class.

Grading

The grade will be based on a 2-hour final exam (40%), and in class (weekly) quizzes (60%). Missed quizzes will be averaged as 0. The lowest quiz will be dropped. Partial credit is NOT given generously and there is no curve - you must MASTER THE MATERIAL!

Makeup quizzes A limited number of makeup quizzes will be permitted. If you need to take a makeup quiz email me. I will answer when the makeup is ready and let you know where to go and take it.

Grading notes: Fractions should be reduced; radicals should be reduced; exponents should be positive unless otherwise indicated; expressions should be simplified - you will lose credit if they are not.

WARNING the final exam covers everything in the course - and many students 'forget' material from the beginning of the course. Consequently many students see a drop from their quiz average to their final grade.
