Meet the Lab

Steven Scyphers, PhD
Assistant Professor
Steven is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Marine and Environmental Sciences and Affiliated Faculty in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Northeastern University. Steven’s research integrates ecology and sociology to understand and develop strategies to overcome major challenges facing coastal communities. His work focuses on sustainable coastal fisheries, shoreline development, ecosystem restoration, and climate adaptation. He was awarded a Science, Engineering, and Education for Sustainability (SEES) Fellowship from the National Science Foundation. He received his BS in Marine Biology at Auburn University and his PhD in Marine Sciences at the University of South Alabama and Dauphin Island Sea Lab.

Katie Castagno, PhD
Coastal Sustainability Postdoctoral Fellow, Northeastern University & The Nature Conservancy
Katie is a postdoctoral fellow appointed jointly with Northeastern University's Marine Science Center and The Nature Conservancy. She studies the impacts of storms on the resilience of coastal communities, including the effectiveness of shoreline stabilization strategies and other human adaptations to an uncertain climatic future. She received her PhD from the MIT-WHOI Joint Program in Oceanography/Applied Ocean Science and Engineering, where she worked with Dr. Jeff Donnelly in the Coastal Systems Group.

Kelsi Furman
PhD Candidate & NSF GRFP Fellow
Kelsi studies the role of social equity and spatial landscape variation in coastal and fisheries management. Her dissertation research is focused on social equity shore-based recreational fisheries. She is an NSF Graduate Research Fellowship recipient and has been awarded an NSF Graduate Internship Program award to intern at NOAA's Southeast Fisheries Science Center in Miami. Kelsi attended Northeastern University for her BS in Environmental Science and completed the Three Seas Program.

Kiera O'Donnell
PhD Candidate
Kiera studies the role of natural, nature-based, and built shorelines in the impacts of hurricanes. Her dissertation research focuses on the landscape and social outcomes of Hurricane Irma in the lower Florida Keys and Hurricane Michael in the Florida Panhandle. Kiera holds a BS degree in Oceanography from the University of New England and previously worked at NOAA as a data analyst for sea level and storms.

Savannah Swinea
PhD Student
Savannah is a PhD student interested in coastal social-ecological systems. Savannah has a BS in Environmental Science from the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill and most recently worked as a Research Technician in the Fodrie Lab at UNC's Institute of Marine Sciences. Her undergraduate Honors Thesis research with Dr. Joel Fodrie focused on the economic impacts of the 2010 Deepwater Horizon Disaster on marine fisheries in the Gulf of Mexico.
