PROTECT Welcomes Eduardo Mateus & Alexandra Ribeiro to the Team

We are delighted to welcome Professors Eduardo Mateus and Alexandra Ribeiro as visiting scholars from the Center for Environmental and Sustainability Research (CENSE),  Faculty of Science and Technology, NOVA University of Lisbon (FCT NOVA) in Portugal. They will be working with Professor Akram Alshawabkeh and the PROTECT Center for the next few months on advanced critical raw materials recovery and further reuse of residues in construction materials. Their collaboration represents Northeastern University’s participation in the European Horizon 2020 Program, and partnership on the “Thinking Rough Towards Sustainability” (e.THROUGH) Project led by Professor Ribeiro of FCT NOVA.

 

Eduardo Mateus holds a PhD in Environmental Sciences and a BSc in Applied Chemistry (Biotechnology), and is currently a Senior Researcher at CENSE and a part of FCT NOVA, Portugal. His research interests focus on the use and study of chromatographic techniques (GC, GCxGC, MDGC, GC/MS and HPLC) and in the development of sample preparation methodologies (e.g. SPE and SPME) for the characterization of complex biological and environmental matrices, environmental and pollutants analysis, chemical ecology and monitoring of remediation processes. He also acts as a guest speaker at national and international conferences, postgraduate courses and technical courses and seminars in the fields of chemical ecology and chromatography.

 

Alexandra Ribeiro is an Associate Professor at NOVA University of Lisbon and earned a PhD in Environmental Engineering from the Technical University of Denmark, as well as a MSc in Sanitary Engineering and a BSc in Environmental Engineering both at NOVA, Portugal. She teaches and conducts research on soil and soil pollution, and remediation techniques, among other related fields. Professor Ribeiro has lead several international and national research projects on electro-remediation, the removal of inorganic and organic contaminants from soil, CCA and creosote treated wood waste, mine waste, sludge, municipal solid waste incinerators fly ash, aiming the valorization of the solids and the liquids (electrolytes), with nutrient recovering. Currently, she is lead coordinator for the EU sponsored e.THROUGH Project of which Northeastern University is a partner.
