February Webinar: Fabienne Petit, “Assessment of Antibiotic-Resistant Escherichia Coli in Karst Hydrosystems”

Biography: Dr. Fabienne Petit has been a Professor of Microbiology at the University of Rouen since 2000.  Her field of work is dedicated to research in environmental microbiology. It is based on an interdisciplinary approach, at the interface between geosciences and environmental microbiology (molecular ecology). This work focuses on the vulnerability and resilience of hydrosystems (karst / rivers / estuaries) to the anthropic pressure exerted on their watersheds: (i) adaptation of microbial communities to chemical contamination (trace metals / organic contaminants including antibiotics), (ii) the behaviour and transfer of pathogenic bacteria (population structure, antimicrobial resistance). This research is performed on different scales: from the level of genes to microbial communities, from consideration of the current situation to the analysis of sedimentary records. The specificity of the research developed in M2C laboratory is to analyse all the microbial datas in their environmental context: use of watershed, hydrology, hydrosedimentary processes. The laboratory has got a single environmental collection of E. coli strains (up to 8000) isolated from different hydrosystems, from which all environmental parameters were well characterized.
