ABSTRACT:

There has been a notable shift in the sustainability goals of the built environment over the last decade, moving from a focus on building energy efficiency to a more holistic approach that prioritizes decarbonization. This shift is crucial in the fight against climate change, as buildings are significant contributors to greenhouse gas emissions. While energy efficiency remains important, we need to pivot from efficiency to decarbonization in our thinking, shift in how we analyze and assess our existing building performance and quantify the value of emissions and source energy. We know that this shift has already begun for new development, primarily because of regulatory requirements, but also because of market demand and early adopters.

However, one of the biggest challenges is the decarbonization & electrification of existing buildings which prioritizes equity, affordability, and reliability. More than 80% of the buildings that will be standing in 2050 have already been built. For us to get to a collective goal of carbon neutrality by 2050, we need to address these existing buildings in a way that demonstrates replicability and scalability and will lead to broader market adoption.
