Costas Panagopoulos and Nick Beauchamp were featured in News@Northeastern’s article, “Government Shutdown: What Can Break the Impasse in Washington.” The NULab faculty discusses the possible aftermath for Democrats and Republicans, who failed to agree on a short-term spending plan Friday night. The impasse reflects the latest manifestation of political polarization in DC. Panagopoulos thinks voters might hold the key to prevent future shutdowns, saying, “If the public puts its foot down and insists that politicians find compromise and reward those who do so, that would break the impasse.” Beauchamp says, “If everyone’s popularity took a hit, it would probably hurt Democrats more than Republicans.”
