NULab core faculty member Nick Beauchamp, assistant professor in Political Science, has provided an analysis of President Obama’s final State of the Union remarks via a “plot map”. Beauchamp has developed a new method to automatically visualize the progress of a speech through its themes and ideas. Similar to a word cloud, the plot map shows words that are most common to a speech, but positions them in such a way that words tend to co-occur in the speech are clustered near to each other and colored accordingly.
