The NULab is delighted to announce our Seedling Grant awards for Fall 2020:
The “Photogrammetry and Public History: The View From Lower Allston” project, P.I. Jim McGrath, will explore the possibilities of photogrammetry in the context of public history work at Northeastern. The project will document the range of graffiti and public art found in this highly-trafficked space, which provides commentary on how some Allston residents have responded to our contemporary moment.
The Early Black Boston Digital Almanac, P.I. Nicole Aljoe, will use seedling support to prepare for the public launch of the EBBDA. The Early Black Boston Digital Almanac curates material about the vibrant Black communities of Boston during the 18th and 19th centuries through a series of digital exhibits created by scholars, students, and interested members of the public.
Jessica Linker, along with Angel Nieves, will begin a pilot project designed to seed interest in two forthcoming lab spaces in Snell Library: the 3D/VR Lab and Social Justice Studio. This pilot, which has a projected completion date of summer 2021, will produce the first in a series of immersive virtual reality museum spaces documenting African American communities in 19th-century Boston (Beacon Hill and the West End).
Moya Bailey will be building out a website for her new book Misogynoir Transformed, which examines the social media activities of Black women as a method for redressing the negative impact of stereotypes in their lives and on health. This website will serve as a hub for the book and an associated podcast.
Jacob Murel will be using seedling support to acquire datasets for a dissertation chapter on discourse surrounding the human body in early modern London. This project will explore the material and iconic significance of the body across 16th- and 17th-century English drama and printed medical records.
We are excited to add these seedlings to the growing set of NULab projects and we look forward to sharing the outcomes of these promising new initiatives in the year to come. We will be sending out a new call for seedling and travel grants in February 2021 so watch this space!
