“Viral Texts” Workshop and transcribe-a-thon
March 14, 2019 @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm
In this workshop, Avery Blankenship will share the research she has conducted thus far as an RA on the Viral Texts project. In particular, Blankenship will discuss a web-based tool she is developing to allow nineteenth-century scholars to contribute transcriptions of texts related to their research to the Viral Texts project. Once the transcriptions are submitted, the tool will allow scholars to receive data about the reprinting history of those texts, as discovered through Viral Texts’ methods for duplicate text detection. This tool will be an important public interface for Viral Texts, allowing us to build a more robust dataset of the popular texts—from all genres—that C19 scholars are most interested in analyzing, while helping those scholars better understand the life of their texts in the fluid textual environment of period newspaper exchanges.
In the second half of this workshop, we will invite participants to test an alpha version of the tool in order to help us improve it prior to public release. If you are a scholar interested in nineteenth-century texts, we will invite you to transcribe a text of particular interest to your work, so we can provide data about its reprinting history. If you are not a C19 scholar, we will have a set of texts of particular interest to our work in Viral Texts for you to transcribe. Either way, we look forward to the community’s help developing this new tool and contributing valuable transcriptions to our growing corpus of seed texts.
Please bring a laptop if you are able.
