ABSTRACT

Gerontechnology is a new term to describe technological applications for geriatric care. In this context, we are proposing a set of gerontechnology developments to help geriatric patients and their caregivers. In previous work, the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Concepción in Chile has developed a set of applications that can cover a wide range of needs. These applications have been developed for children, high altitude workers, multiple sclerosis patients and stroke victims, but can easily be applied to the elderly population. In this talk, I will show different applications and how they can contribute to improving care in independent, frail and dependent populations. Examples include unobtrusive monitoring of physiological variables, cognitive training and electrostimulation for better quality of life.
