Bowerman & Larimer Command Neuron Movies

In 1974 Bob Bowerman and Jim Larimer published two papers on Crayfish circumesophageal command neurons in the Journal of Experimental Biology. These papers generated a controversy with regard to the generality of single neuron control versus population coding of behavior in motor systems ultimately resulting in the review by Kupfermann and Weiss in 1978, The Command Neuron Concept. At his Festschrift in 2006, Jim Larimer agreed to provide me with the original films of the experiments that provided the data for these two papers to create this website for teaching and research purposes. Although the original films appear lost, subsequent to Jim's passing, Austin Riggs discovered a film in Jim's desk that proved to be the compendum that Jim was showing at meetings in the middle 70's. Media Services at the Northeastern University Library was able to convert the 16mm film to a QuickTime movie and that movie is the basis of this web page. This is a work in progress, expect ongoing additions of movies.
