A MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR

bugara-k

Software skills are integral to all engineering disciplines. I believe it is important that we come up with more effective techniques to teach technology to students.  Why?  Just to begin, an answer to this question is:  Technology is fast becoming an important aspect of just about everything we do - in the humanities and social sciences, healthcare, engineering, along with many more fields.  It is vital that our students stay up-to-date in this rapidly changing technology field.  They must understand HOW to construct, and make decisions about, cutting-edge software.  If we succeed in communicating this point within engineering, there is the potential of a revolution - in the way software will be designed and built - that could have a tremendous social impact. I am committed to producing a new breed of software engineers who understand the complexities of the business world, including all its risks and opportunities. Such engineers have to focus on more than programming to deliver systems that are safe and secure and that accurately address the socio-technical needs of contemporary society. Only in these ways can we prepare our students for their own professional lives – which includes the co-op experience - and take ownership of their IT infrastructures.

STUDENT TESTIMONIALS

"The cultural diversity of Amadeus by far is the best moment of my co-op experience apart from my work. Because you understand different perspective, work ethics and pool of talented professionals all these provided me with the best resources to work. Freedom to explore multiple technologies and brainstorming solutions and the team support in achieving the goal made my co-op experience worth remembering."

"Interning at Ernst & Young for months is one of the best memories of my life. I got to travel to Los Angeles for Intern Training. I also travelled to Orlando for EY International Intern Leadership Conference. During the conference which was for a week long, EY also sponsored a trip to Disney World where I made some amazing friends."

  • As women in IS/CSYE, we realize the need for a platform, to come together, share, learn and grow – a platform that is a safe space to express our insecurities, but at the same time a space that challenges us to be pushed outside our comfort zones.
  • Our aim is to Encourage and Build our fellow women, over a broad spectrum, right from fundamental technical skills to being articulate and confident about expressing their ideas and beliefs – enabling them to tap into their potential, their wisdom and apply it to real world problem solving.
  • This student organization is an initiative for girls from IS/CSYE. We hold speaker sessions with industry professionals and peer-to-peer support activities that are focused on providing you with an all-rounded support to build yourself towards the opportunities you are looking for.

FEATURED STUDENT PROJECTS

A reward based solution for children with ADD/ADHD

Final project for the Application Engineering and Development (AED) Class (Fall 2018) at Northeastern University, Boston:

  • Developed a Socio-Technical Ecosystem for the ADHD child, parent, doctor and the teacher, all working together to help the child.
  • Should theoretically reduce the usage of drugs and human intervention between the child and the helping parties.
  • Built using Java swings with video rewards and Text Alerts using DJ Native and Twilio SMS API.
  • Next steps include converting the application into Android/iOS application for real working application.

ALUMNI TESTIMONIALS

"Being able to do a co-op during my Master's at Northeastern was one of the best things to happen. Working with real time data and being able to be a part of an energetic team greatly enhanced my professionalism and helped me lay down my career path effectively. The experience was truly helpful in understanding and following better data mining techniques and providing excellent analytical solutions through Business Intelligence."

SOME OF OUR CO-OP PARTNERS

WHAT OUR EMPLOYER ARE SAYING:

  • “Moviri has been a proud Northeastern Co-op employer for the last 4 years now, essentially the better part of our period of resident operations in Boston. We have been very satisfied so far, as we had the chance to partner up with technically savvy, self-starting, dedicated students, that I am sure will have brilliant careers on the global stage. Our US office can still be rightfully considered a start-up, therefore a workplace where everyone needs to approach work in a flexible way, be ready to multi-task and willing to go outside their comfort zone. Also, we take pride in putting incredible passion in what we do. Co-op students help our team with “entry level” assignments as they first come in – and we consider them as if they were full-time employees. From there, the sky is the limit, quite literally. As we speak, we have an all Northeastern-alumni team delivering world-class value to a global financial organization: amongst them, a Co-op student who will engage as a Data Scientist to the end of this year.”.

    MOVIRI, BOSTON, MA
  • “I hired four co-op students in January of 2017 to work in QA and the Help Desk areas. I was very pleased with the technical background they possessed and their attitude towards working with my team leads to perform their job duties. The co-op students were very eager to learn, they listened well and easily became part of the teams. The work continued through May of 2017. They helped our team to achieve the aggressive project time lines, working on many manual testing and performance testing initiatives and they were able to have more productivity after the initial training period.”.

EMPLOYER SPEAKER SESSIONS

The MGEN Cooperative Education Program

The College of Engineering Graduate Cooperative Education Program (co-op) is a key opportunity for experiential learning where students work in temporary industry positions applying their knowledge and skills that they have learned from their degree program.

Upon verification from their program, students may apply for related industry positions and after interviewing and being offered a position by employers. Cooperative Education at the graduate level is not just a way for students to gain real world experience, but is a way to challenge, network, expand and fine-tune their knowledge within their respective industry.

The goals of cooperative education are to:

  • Apply knowledge and skills in new, authentic contexts
  • Develop new knowledge and skills
  • Integrate and use the deepened knowledge and skills in your academic programs

Reflect on and articulate how you used your knowledge and skills, how you gained knowledge and skills, and how theory and practice” work together.

Co-op Team

A MESSAGE FROM THE CO-OP DIRECTOR

My name is Maricla Pirozzi, and I am the Coop Director for the Multi-disciplinary Graduate Programs. My team is responsible for the coop placement for information systems, computer systems engineering, IOT, and Network Systems.  Our programs can take students of diverse engineering fields and turn them into proficient software developers, designers, and architects so that they can contribute more richly to the field of engineering from which they came. The success of our program includes homegrown software design and development methodology that made it easy for our students to build complex software quickly.

We have high success rates in coop job placement: major companies such as IBM, Google, Facebook, Amazon, Oracle, Microsoft, Fidelity, etc. have hired our students. This past year we have placed over 350 students on coop assignments. We place our students as software engineers, web developers, Data Science Engineers, Big Data and Network Engineers. Lately, we have gone further into placing our students as digital business designers as well as cloud and blockchain engineers. We offer a 20-credit hour certificate in Blockchain application development -the first of its kind. Recently, two student-teams of the IS program won 2 major Blockchain Hackathons.

Through the coop program, we were able to build ongoing partnerships with the likes of KPMG around Blockchain technologies, and Mass General around Data Science and image analytics. We are in the process of building an innovation lab in conjunction with Blue Cross/Blue Shield. We have discussions with other various entities around the automation and visual design of legal contracts.

We are excited and look forward to working with you to leverage the cadre of talent we have in our coop candidates to help your company achieve its strategic objectives.

I will be glad to set up a call to discuss this further.
