Tea at 4:00 p.m. in the Math Lounge

Abstract:   Characters are special functions on groups. A great deal of attention has been paid to the problem of finding formulas for these functions for classical groups such as unitary and orthogonal groups. Despite these efforts, our understanding of characters remains fragmentary. This talk will show how algebraic geometry and elementary logic can be used to recast the problem of characters in a surprising way.
