Abstract: We will discuss several naturally arising problems in arithmetic, including the local-global conjecture for integral Apollonian gaskets and Zaremba's conjecture. While the questions emerge in completely unrelated ways, they boil down to the same issue of determining a Hasse-type principle in a thin orbit. A key role is played by the recent explosion in spectral gap technology in the thin setting.
