Abstract:   In this lecture I will survey some developments in the well-posedness theory for non-linear dispersive equations. Using the Korteweg-deVries equations as a model, I will discuss the breakthroughs of the 90's. I will then turn to other natural equations, such as the Benjamin-Ono equation and the Kadomstev-Petviashvili I equation, for which the methods of the 90's fail and report on recent developments for them.
