Abstract: Unipotent flows exhibit a well-behaved class of dynamical systems. It was shown by M. Ratner that orbit closures as well as finite invariant measures for unipotent flows can be described in algebraic terms. This classification result has been a powerful tool for solving equidistribution and counting questions and has led to many remarkable developments. We discuss some number-theoretic applications of these techniques.
