Event Organizers

This symposium is presented by the 2018-2019 Northeastern University’s Art + Design Dean’s Research Fellows in the area of Critical Creative Practice

Psyche Loui
Real-Time EEG Sonification and Their Applications in Health and Creativity
Assistant Professor, Director Music Imaging and Neural Dynamics Lab, Music Technology

The neuroscience of music cognition, musical perception, pitch problems, singing, tone-deafness, music disorders and emotional impact of music and the voice, comprise much of Psyche Loui’s research and work. What happens in the brain when we create music? What gives some people a chill when they are moved by music? Can music be used to help with psychiatric and neurological disorders? These are questions that Loui tackles in the lab. Director of the MIND Lab (Music, Imaging and Neural Dynamics) at Northeastern University, Loui has published in the journals Current Biology, Journal of Neuroscience, Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience, NeuroImage, Frontiers in Psychology, Current Neurology and Neuroscience Reports, Music Perception, Annuals of the New York Academy of Sciences, and others.

Cammy Brothers
Drawing as Practice
Associate Professor - Visual Studies

Cammy Brothers specializes in Italian Renaissance and Mediterranean art and architecture and has a joint appointment in Architecture and in Art & Design. She received her A.B. from Harvard and Radcliffe Colleges, her M.A. from the Courtauld Institute of Art, and her Ph.D. from Harvard University. Her book, Michelangelo, Drawing, and the Invention of Architecture (Yale University Press, 2008; recipient of the Morey Prize from the College Art Association and the Hitchcock Prize from the Society of Architectural Historians) argues that Michelangelo’s architectural drawings are best understood in terms of his experience as a painter and sculptor. It explores the idea of drawing as a mode of thinking and reconstructs the process by which Michelangelo arrived at new ideas. Her new book, "Giuliano da Sangallo and the Ruins of Rome," considers the role of drawing in the rediscovery of the ruins of ancient Rome. It is forthcoming from Princeton University Press in 2018.

Derek Curry
Artistic approaches to Machine Learning
Assistant Professor

Derek Curry is an Assistant Professor in the College of Arts, Media and Design at Northeastern University. His interdisciplinary practice combines artistic production with research techniques from the humanities, science and technology studies, natural language processing, artificial intelligence, and machine learning. He uses a practice-based research approach to investigate topics where information may be limited, and to create artworks and games that provide an experiential understanding of topics where information may be limited, such as automated decision-making systems used by algorithmic stock trading systems and Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) gathering practices.
