Day 6: A Day on the Town
This morning felt promising. I woke up without my alarm clock at about 10:30am. I felt pretty relaxed, given that this was a Sunday, one of our select few days off from classes. However, after checking my phone, I saw that my parents, grandmother and sister were coming at 11:00, forcing be back into my morning routine of throwing on some clothes, brushing my teeth, and bolting out the door. But sadly, this time it didn’t come with breakfast. It goes as they say: the early bird gets the worm.
Once my family got in, they just had to see my room. This came with the usual comments of “I like this setup,” “You are looking good,” and the classic, “Pick up your dirty clothes off the floor.” After a bit of orienting, we drove by First Canadian Place so I could show them the shopping mall below where we have classes. My dad dropped us off and drove off to find a spot to pull over. However, we realized after he left that my mom still had our automatic key on her, so when my dad stopped the car a few blocks away, he couldn’t restart it. I had to jog about a mile or so to get to the car to speed the process up. It wasn’t my intention, but I guess I got my daily workout in!
After that whole fiasco, we made our way to the intended destination for the day, The Rogers Centre, home of the Toronto Blue Jays. We got into the stadium at around 12:30, and with the game starting at 1, we figured it would be cool to go grab some lunch. After walking the perimeter of the stadium, all we could find were pizza stands and hot dogs. Eventually we found one place that sold chicken tenders but that’s about it. We ended up getting some hot dogs and returning to our seats to watch the game. The Blue Jays were playing the Athletics, and things started out alright, with the Athletics getting one early run. But at the fifth inning, the pitcher started getting a bit tired, and a couple errors later, it was 5-0. As the innings went by, the gap widened, and we ended up leaving during the 7th inning, when the score was 9-0. It apparently ended 9-2 in the Athletics’ favor.
After that we stopped by the hotel my family was staying at to go grab our dogs, and we headed off to grab some food. My mom has very expensive tastes, so we went down to a place called Red’s Midtown Tavern. They had outdoor seating, which was nice because the dogs could come sit with us. Since we own two Yorkshire Terriers, they were pretty manageable. After dinner, I walked back to Ryerson, got on a call with some friends for a few hours, then decided to hit the hay.
I think having these off days is very important to the schedule. It would be mind-numbing to be in class every single day, and we need time to explore the city. Some people visited the islands, others went biking, and I had this whole adventure. Days like this remind me why I’m really here. I am here to experience new cultures and learn new ideas, and this day helped me work more towards that goal.
