COMM 2555/GAME 2555 GAMES FOR CHANGE:
This course provides students with a sound introduction to the psychological and behavioral theories of entertainment media with the goal of implementing these theories to the future design and evaluation of video games for change. It focuses on the psychological, behavioral, and social aspects of serious video games instead of on coding and programming elements. It will be organized around a collection of selected readings and real-world game examples and discussions. The course will be based on reflective thinking, critical evaluation, and creative application.
COMM 2301 METHODS AND RESEARCH IN COMMUNICATION
This course explain strengths and limitations of social science as a field of inquiry. It introduces students to the basic statistical concepts used by communication researchers and offers students an opportunity to learn to read, interpret, and critically evaluate research publications. Students will be exposed to basic social science concepts and research designs and the fundamentals of conducting and analyzing research using surveys, experiments, and content analyses. As part of the final project, students are expected to conduct their own empirical research study, which entails research design, data collection, data analysis, and a written presentation.
HLTH 5450 HEALTHCARE RESEARCH
This course presents a broad overview of the research philosophy, design, and methods. It serves as an introduction to health and healthcare research by providing a survey of the major research designs and methods that are at the core of contemporary clinical research, for example, surveys, experiments, participant observation, interviews, and unobtrusive research, as well as the systematic methods of performing data collection and handling complex data sets. To understand and apply research methods, this course will also familiarize students with an array of challenging research issues related to human health, psychology, medicine, and other topics. Issues of statistical methods and data analysis will be covered though the ultimate goal of the course is to help students to become more informed consumers and contributors to health research.
