Biological Imaging Laboratory
Color Segmentation of Benthic Transects
Five Macintosh II systems were provided to the Marine Science Center by an Instruments
and Instrument Development grant and other funds to implement a Biological Imaging
laboratory consisting of hybrid video/computer motion analysis system, a video
microscope, a macrophotography system, a slide scanner system and a flatbed scanner
system. These instruments are available for general use by faculty and students of
MSC and the Biology Department.
Correlated Electrophysiological and Kinematic Analysis
of Animal Behavior
- A Motion Analysis System includes a Macintosh 7600 PPC with 32MB CPU Memory and a 1200Meg hard disk,
Mitsubishi CP-10U Color Video Printer,
and a Sony MVR-5500 Electronic Still Video Recorder/Player, Sony EVS-3000 High-8, and
SLV-R5 SVHS decks as well as a CCD-V5000 camcorder.
- A Slide Scanning System includes a Macintosh IIci with a 1.2G Quantum Drive,
a RasterOps 24STV Frame Grabber and a Sony PHV-A7 Photo Video slide camera.
- A Macrophotography System includes a Macintosh IIfx with 20MB processor memory,
240 MB Quantum hard disk, Syquist Backup Disk, Apple CD ROM Drive, two color and
one monochrome displays, GW Instruments MacAdios II analog interface, Data Translation
QuickCapture , RasterOps 24STV Frame Grabber,, Sony XC-211 RGB camera head and a DataTranslation
QuickCapture interfaced for RGB acquisition. This system is interfaced to a Bogen
Macrophotography System and an Olympus SZH10 Research Stereo Microscope.
Segmentation and Analysis of Image Objects
- A Video Microscope System has a Macintosh IIx Processor with 8 MByte Processor
Memory, a 240 MByte APS Hard Drive, DataTranslation Quick Capture Frame Grabber
interfaced to a Javelin RGB camera head or a Sony XC-77 gray scale head, Varispec
Tunable Filter which allows program selectable switching from 400-720 nM and an Olympus
VANOX Microscope with Nomarski and Phase Contrast Systems.
- A Flatbed Scanner System includes Macintosh IIx with 8 MByte Processor Memory,
a 240 MByte APS Hard Drive, an Apple Color Flatbed Scanner and associated software
including OmniPage Pro OCR Software.
Visualization of Particle Flow
Software has been developed at MSC (ColorImage) which allows color based image
segmentation and object quantification, as well as computer controlled stop-frame
video based motion analysis (Ayers and Fletcher, 1991; Ayers, 1992) and is supported
on all these systems.
